About Western Highlands
Mount Hagen is the capital of Western Highlands Province and the third-largest city in Papua New Guinea. It sits in the fertile Wahgi Valley at roughly 1,670 metres above sea level, surrounded by highland peaks, coffee gardens and tea estates, and it works as the commercial and transport hub of the Highlands.
The town began as an airstrip in the 1930s and grew into a trading and administrative centre during the colonial era. Its name comes from Mount Hagen, an old eroded volcano about 24 kilometres to the northwest. Today the city combines a busy central market, banks, shops and government offices with the strong rural and tribal character of the surrounding villages.
The best-known event is the Mount Hagen Cultural Show, held each August, which brings together sing-sing groups from across the Highlands in elaborate body paint, feather headdresses and traditional dance. Nearby attractions include the Baiyer River Wildlife Sanctuary, coffee plantations in the Wahgi Valley and trekking routes toward Mount Giluwe and Mount Wilhelm.
For travellers, Mount Hagen is a base for highland culture, birdwatching, local markets and journeys along the Highlands Highway toward Lae, Goroka, Mendi and Wabag. Business travel is tied to coffee, tea, agriculture, trade and government, with Kagamuga airport linking the city to Port Moresby and other centres.
The city is best explored with local advice and organized transport, particularly outside daylight hours. It offers a close look at modern Papua New Guinea against the backdrop of one of the country's most culturally rich highland regions.
