About Tufi Airport
Tufi Airport is the small domestic airfield serving Tufi and the fjord coastline of Oro Province in north-eastern Papua New Guinea. Built in the 1960s by the Australian Army, it remains a remote and simple gateway used mainly for domestic flights connecting the area with Port Moresby.
The airport operates with a single unpaved runway measuring about 920 metres long and 30 metres wide, with no control tower, lighting, instrument landing system or refuelling. Operations are limited to daylight visual flying conditions, reflecting the airstrip's basic infrastructure and the surrounding mountainous coastal terrain.
Located at Tufi, roughly 250 kilometres east-north-east of Port Moresby, the airfield is reached primarily by direct domestic flights lasting about 50 to 55 minutes. On arrival, the airstrip sits only a short walk from Tufi village and Tufi Resort, a well-known base for diving and fjord exploration.
Despite its limited facilities, Tufi Airport plays an important role for travellers visiting one of Papua New Guinea's most distinctive coastal regions, where onward journeys are usually arranged by local boat, vehicle or resort transfer.
