About Morobe

Lae is Papua New Guinea's second-largest city and the capital of Morobe Province, set on the Huon Gulf where the Markham River meets the coast. As the country's main industrial and port hub, it links coastal shipping with the Highlands Highway and gives visitors a working view of modern Papua New Guinea alongside tropical gardens and rainforest.

The city grew from a small mission and mining-era settlement into a major base during the Second World War, when Lae and nearby Salamaua were fought over in 1943. Reminders of that period remain at the Lae War Cemetery and in the city's careful botanical plantings, which include a large collection of orchids and tropical species.

Central areas such as Top Town and Eriku hold shops, banks, markets and restaurants, while the Lae Main Market is one of the most important fresh-produce markets in the country, selling taro, bananas, sweet potato and tropical fruit from Morobe and the Highlands. The Papua New Guinea University of Technology campus sits just outside the city and is a leading centre for applied science and engineering education in the region.

Lae is Papua New Guinea's industrial and logistics heart, with the busy Lae Port, major food, beverage and manufacturing companies, and road links to the Highlands and Madang. This makes it a practical base for business travellers, while nature-focused visitors use it as a gateway to rainforest, birdwatching and the Huon Peninsula.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Lae offers a compact introduction to Papua New Guinea's urban energy, history and gardens. Its airport at Nadzab, about 42 km from the city, connects Lae with Port Moresby and other regional centres, making the city both a destination and a gateway to Morobe Province.

Morobe Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Lae has a warm, humid tropical climate with rain in every month, so light rain gear is useful year-round. The relatively drier period from around December to March is often more comfortable for sightseeing, while the middle months can be very wet.

How to Get Around

Within Lae, public motor vehicles (PMVs) and taxis are common, and central areas around Top Town and Eriku can be covered on foot with care. For the airport, business districts and longer trips, private drivers, hotel transport and rental cars offer more comfort and flexibility.

Where to Stay

Most hotels and guest houses cluster in central Lae, around Top Town, Eriku and the airport road corridor, with a few business-oriented properties near the port. Choose a well-established hotel with security if you are staying for work or arriving late.

Food & Drink

Lae is known for the Lae Main Market, where fresh taro, bananas, sweet potatoes, tropical fruit and vegetables arrive from Morobe Province and the Highlands. Hotel restaurants, cafés and local eateries serve PNG staples such as mumu-cooked dishes, fresh seafood, rice and grilled meats.
