About Wau Airport
Wau Airport is a small domestic airport serving Wau in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Located about 1 km from the town centre, it provides essential air access to the Bulolo Valley goldfields, mining operations, agricultural communities and medical evacuation flights to Port Moresby or Mount Hagen.
The airfield has a long aviation history. A grass runway was constructed in 1927 by Cecil Levien with local labour, and Ernest Mustar's first landing on 19 April 1927 helped open the Bulolo Valley goldfields to air transport. The short, sloping grass strip requires aircraft to land uphill and take off downhill toward Mount Kaindi.
The airport operates a single basic passenger terminal for domestic flights by Air Niugini, PNG Air and charter operators. Facilities are modest, with waiting areas and refreshment options but limited dining and shopping choices.
Road connections link Wau to Bulolo and Lae, Papua New Guinea's second-largest city, while taxis and local PMV buses provide transport from the airport. Wet-season weather and mountain terrain can affect flight schedules, so travelers should allow flexibility.
