Umba Airport (UMC)

Umba Airport is a small rural airstrip serving the Umba area of Morobe Province in Papua New Guinea. It provides an important air connection for remote highland communities, where road access is limited and aircraft are often used to carry passengers, supplies and medical needs. Located at an elevation of approximately 1,800 metres in mountainous terrain, the airport has a single grass-and-clay runway and no commercial passenger terminal. It mainly supports charter, community and cargo flights rather than scheduled airline services. The nearest larger town, Bulolo, lies about 77 km to the east, while the provincial centre of Lae is roughly 120 km away. Because overland travel in the region can be slow and difficult, air links play a key role in reaching Umba and nearby villages. Travellers should confirm flight arrangements and local transport in advance, as facilities at the airstrip are limited and there are no scheduled commercial services, shops or passenger lounges.
