About Kaduna
Kaduna is the capital of Kaduna State in north-west Nigeria, lying on the Kaduna River and serving as one of the country's most important northern cities. Once the capital of the former Northern Region, it remains a major administrative, military, educational and industrial centre shaped by Hausa, Fulani and Gbagyi communities.
Founded in 1900 by British colonists and made capital of the Northern Region in 1917, Kaduna grew around the Lagos–Kano railway and still reflects its colonial and post-independence history. Its streets combine government buildings, mosques, churches, markets and industrial zones with newer infrastructure projects.
Key landmarks include the Sultan Bello Mosque, the Kaduna National Museum and Murtala Muhammed Square, home to the Kaduna Polo Club. Nearby, Kajuru Castle offers a striking hilltop attraction, while Ahmadu Bello Stadium and the racecourse host major sporting and cultural events.
Kaduna's two main local government areas, Kaduna North and Kaduna South, contain districts such as Tudun Wada, Kakuri, Barnawa, Sabon Gari and Malali. Each area has its own mix of residences, markets, offices and leisure venues, giving the city a layered, working urban feel.
As northern Nigeria's industrial hub, Kaduna hosts textile, machinery, steel, aluminium and automobile production, including the Peugeot assembly plant, alongside the Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company and the Bank of Agriculture headquarters. Its rail link to Abuja and role as a gateway to the north make it relevant to business travellers, while its museums, markets and cultural institutions draw leisure visitors.
