About Cabo Delgado
Pemba is the capital of Cabo Delgado Province and the main port city of northern Mozambique, set on the deep, sheltered waters of Pemba Bay. It serves as a practical base for the nearby Quirimbas Archipelago and is known for its warm Indian Ocean climate, coral reefs and relaxed coastal atmosphere.
Founded as Porto Amélia during the Portuguese colonial period, the city was renamed Pemba after Mozambican independence in 1975. Its population mixes Makonde, Makua, Mwani and Swahili communities, reflected in local languages, markets, music and everyday life alongside the official Portuguese.
Wimbe Beach, a short drive east of the centre, is the city's best-known shoreline, with white sand, beachfront restaurants and easy access to snorkelling and diving. Around the bay, the old fishing quarter of Paquitequete, dhow-building yards and the central market offer a closer look at Pemba's maritime culture, while the Quirimbas National Park lies within reach to the north.
Pemba's deep-water port, cashew and fishing trades, and growing role as a service centre for Cabo Delgado's offshore gas industry give the city genuine commercial weight. Hotels, dive centres, restaurants and logistics providers cater to a mix of leisure visitors, divers and business travellers.
For travellers, Pemba works as both a destination and a gateway: beaches and reef diving anchor leisure stays, while the airport, port and gas-sector activity make it relevant for regional business and project-related travel.

Cabo Delgado Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit Pemba, with warm, sunny weather, lower humidity and good visibility for diving and snorkelling. The rainy season runs roughly from November to April, bringing hotter conditions and occasional heavy downpours.
How to Get Around
Pemba is small enough to explore parts of the centre on foot, while shared minibuses known as chapas, taxis and motorcycle taxis cover most local journeys. Private transfers and rental cars are useful for reaching Wimbe Beach, the airport and departure points for Quirimbas boat trips.
Where to Stay
Wimbe Beach offers the main cluster of beachfront hotels, guesthouses and dive lodges, while the city centre has more affordable business and budget options. Staying near the old town or Paquitequete gives easy access to markets, the port and local seafood restaurants.
Food & Drink
Pemba's food is built around fresh seafood such as prawns, fish and calamari, often grilled and served with rice, cassava or coconut-based sauces. The central market and beachfront restaurants are good places to try local and Portuguese-influenced dishes, alongside simple cafés and bars.
