About Zambezia
Quelimane is the capital of Zambézia Province and one of Mozambique's oldest coastal towns, set on the Rio dos Bons Sinais a short distance inland from the Indian Ocean. Its riverside port, broad palm-lined avenues and colonial-era buildings give the city a calm, provincial atmosphere.
The city has a long trading history and was visited by Vasco da Gama in 1498 before becoming a Portuguese colonial settlement. The Old Cathedral, dating from 1776, and restored riverside buildings reflect this heritage, while the city remains an important regional trade and fishing centre.
The compact historic centre is easy to explore around the riverfront, where visitors can see the Old Cathedral, municipal market and the modernist Quelimane Library. Outside the city, Zalala Beach offers a popular coastal escape for swimming and seafood.
Quelimane is the administrative and commercial hub of Zambézia, with an economy linked to coconut and rice farming, fishing and port trade. For travellers, it works as both a relaxed cultural stop and a practical gateway to the province, suited to business visits and independent exploration.
