About Niassa
Lichinga is the capital of Niassa Province in northern Mozambique and sits on the Lichinga Plateau at about 1,360 metres above sea level. The highland setting gives the city a noticeably cooler climate than much of the country, and its location roughly 60 kilometres east of Lake Niassa makes it a natural starting point for exploring the region.
Founded during the colonial period as Vila Cabral, a farming and military settlement, the city was renamed Lichinga after Mozambique's independence. Reminders of that history sit alongside contemporary landmarks such as the Lichinga Cathedral and the Niassa Provincial Museum, which documents the province's cultures and natural heritage.
The city is divided into several administrative posts and neighbourhoods, or bairros, with the lively central market at the heart of daily life. Travellers often combine time in town with excursions to the rocky shores and clear waters of Lake Niassa and to viewpoints across the plateau.
As the administrative and commercial centre of Niassa, Mozambique's largest province, Lichinga functions as a hub for regional trade, public services and agriculture. Cassava, maize, beans, rice and timber are important to the local economy, while restaurants and cafés serve a mix of Mozambican and regional dishes.
For leisure visitors, Lichinga is best known as the gateway to the Niassa Special Reserve, one of Africa's largest protected wilderness areas, home to elephants, lions, leopards and diverse birdlife. Business travellers, conservation workers and government visitors also use the city as a practical base for northern Mozambique.

Niassa Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
