About Baja California Sur
La Paz is the capital of Baja California Sur, set on the Sea of Cortez with a relaxed waterfront character, desert surroundings and a strong connection to the ocean. Its Malecón promenade, historic centre and nearby islands make it a distinctive base for exploring the southern Baja California peninsula.
The city grew from a Spanish settlement founded by Hernán Cortés in 1535 and later became an important pearling and trading port. Historic landmarks such as the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace and restored streets in the centro recall that past, while the modern Malecón anchors daily life along the bay.
Most visitors stay around the Malecón and central districts, where hotels, restaurants and cafés sit within walking distance of the waterfront. Outside the centre, day trips lead to Balandra Beach, Playa El Tecolote and Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO-listed marine area known for snorkelling, sea lions and seasonal whale sharks.
La Paz functions as a state government and services centre, with marine research, ecotourism and fishing shaping its economy. Seafood restaurants, casual taco stands and waterfront dining reflect its coastal identity, and the city remains calmer and more local-feeling than the resorts of Los Cabos to the south.
For travellers, La Paz offers a practical mix of nature, culture and services: it works as a standalone destination for beaches and wildlife and as a gateway to the rest of Baja California Sur.
