About Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave
Veracruz is one of Mexico's oldest and most storied port cities, set on the Gulf of Mexico in the state of Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave. Founded in 1519 as Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz, it remains a working harbour, a centre of jarocho music and dance, and a city where everyday life revolves around coffee houses, seafood and the sea.
Its historic core reflects centuries of trade and defence. San Juan de Ulúa, the fortress on an offshore island, the Baluarte de Santiago and the colonial-era Zócalo with its cathedral and Palacio Municipal recall the city's role in Spanish colonial history and Mexico's later conflicts.
Visitors spend much of their time between the Centro Histórico and the Malecón, the seafront promenade lined with monuments, street vendors and ocean views. Nearby, the Veracruz Aquarium, one of the largest in Latin America, and the Naval Museum draw families, while Boca del Río offers beaches, restaurants and a more modern hotel zone.
Veracruz is famous for its Carnival, one of the best known in Mexico, held before Lent with parades, concerts and large crowds. The city's food culture is equally strong: seafood dishes such as huachinango a la veracruzana, marisquerías and the café lechero ritual at Gran Café de la Parroquia define local daily life.
As a major port and commercial hub, the city welcomes both leisure visitors and business travellers, with conferences, trade activity and tourism shaping a destination that combines history, music, food and Gulf Coast energy.
