About Thyolo
Thyolo is a small highland town in Malawi's Southern Region and the administrative centre of Thyolo District. It sits on the edge of the Shire Highlands at roughly 900 metres above sea level, surrounded by some of Malawi's oldest and most productive tea estates.
The area's tea-growing heritage dates to the early 20th century, with estates such as Satemwa, founded in 1923, and Conforzi shaping the landscape. Colonial-era plantation houses, old factory buildings and neatly planted rows of tea remain central to the town's identity and economy.
The compact town centre clusters around the boma and market, while most visitor experiences lie in the surrounding estates. Satemwa Tea Estate offers factory tours, tea tastings, coffee walks and stays at Huntingdon House, and Thyolo Mountain and its forest reserve are known for hiking and birdlife, including the endangered Thyolo alethe.
Thyolo's economy revolves around tea, coffee and macadamia production, and estate lodges serve seasonal, locally grown food. The surrounding hills open up to views of Mount Mulanje and the Shire Valley, giving the area a relaxed, scenic character distinct from Malawi's larger cities.
For leisure travellers, Thyolo offers tea-country scenery, walking, cycling and birding, while business visitors are drawn by its close ties to Malawi's tea industry and its position within easy reach of Blantyre, the main commercial hub.
