About Salima

Salima is a lakeshore township in Malawi's Central Region and the administrative centre of Salima District, about 100 km east of Lilongwe. It serves as a practical gateway to Lake Malawi's sandy western shore, particularly the popular Senga Bay beaches, and is known for a relaxed trade-and-transport character rather than big-city attractions.

The town developed as a rail and lake transport junction. From the mid-1970s, a railway line linked Salima with Lilongwe, while Chipoka, roughly 32 km south, connected rail services with Lake Malawi steamer routes. Although large-scale rail and port activity has declined, that legacy still shapes Salima's identity as a regional stopover and supply point.

Most visitors head towards Lake Malawi rather than staying in the town centre. Senga Bay offers lakeside lodges, beaches, boat trips and sunset cruises, while the Marelli Islands and Nankoma Island form part of Lake Malawi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inland, Kuti Community Wildlife Reserve provides a family-friendly bush experience with walking and cycling safaris among species such as giraffe, zebra and antelope. The busy Friday Taifa Market shows everyday local trade.

Fishing, small-scale trade, agriculture and tourism support the local economy. Restaurants and lodges serve fresh lake fish, especially chambo, alongside nsima and other Malawian staples. Meetings and events are modest but growing, with lakeside hotels and lodges used for retreats, workshops and leisure stays.

For travellers, Salima works best as a convenient lakeshore base: it is close enough to Lilongwe for day trips, yet far enough to offer beach relaxation, wildlife visits and a quieter pace. Leisure visitors come for swimming, water sports and island trips, while business and transit travellers use the town's road connections and lakeshore accommodation as a stopover between the capital and the lake.
