About Southern
Blantyre is Malawi's commercial and financial centre and its second-largest city, set in the Shire Highlands of the Southern Region. Founded by Scottish missionaries in 1876 and named after David Livingstone's birthplace in Scotland, the city pairs a busy business core with leafy residential areas and historic buildings.
Its colonial and religious heritage survives in landmarks such as St Michael and All Angels Church and Mandala House, the oldest building in Malawi. The Chichiri Museum and cultural centre document the country's history and traditions, while nearby Mount Mulanje and the Zomba Plateau draw visitors toward the region's highland scenery.
The Limbe district is a lively commercial hub known for its market and trading activity, while the city centre holds banks, offices and the headquarters of major companies. Neighbourhoods such as Sunnyside, Kabula and Nyambadwe mix guesthouses, restaurants and residential streets.
As Malawi's main business gateway, Blantyre is home to financial institutions, the Malawi Stock Exchange and trade in tea, tobacco and coffee. International meetings, corporate travel and commerce keep the city busy, while its cafés, restaurants and nearby natural attractions give leisure visitors reasons to stay.
