About Antsiranana

Antsiranana, formerly Diego-Suarez, is Madagascar's principal northern port city and the capital of the Diana Region, built around one of the world's largest natural harbours. Its tropical setting, colonial-era streets and easy access to empty beaches and protected forests make it the gateway to the country's far north.

The city was named after the Portuguese navigator Diogo Soares, who visited the bay in the 16th century. France later developed it into an important naval base; British forces landed here in 1942 during Operation Ironclad, and the city was renamed Antsiranana in 1975. Old administrative buildings, the upper town's military quarter and broad colonial avenues still shape the centre alongside mosques, churches and a lively covered market.

Beyond the centre, Antsiranana is surrounded by some of Madagascar's best-known natural sites. Amber Mountain National Park protects a cool volcanic rainforest with waterfalls and lemurs, while the turquoise Emerald Sea, the sandy coves of the Three Bays and the beach village of Ramena are easy day trips. The red sandstone formations of the Tsingy Rouges and the French Mountain viewpoint complete a varied northern landscape.

The port drives much of the local economy through tuna fishing and processing, salt and sugar shipments, and regional trade. Around it, waterfront restaurants serve fresh seafood, while bakeries and cafés along the central streets reflect French influence, and the market sells local fruit, spices and street food. Sakalava Bay's steady winds also draw kitesurfers between June and October.

For leisure travellers, Antsiranana combines harbour scenery, colonial heritage and wildlife excursions in one compact northern base. Business visitors are drawn by the port and regional administration, and can extend trips to nearby beaches, national parks and diving spots within a short drive of the city.

Antsiranana Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October brings the most comfortable weather for exploring the bay, beaches and parks, with cooler temperatures and little rain. June to October is also the windiest period and popular for kitesurfing, while December to April is hotter, more humid and within the cyclone season.

How to Get Around

Central Antsiranana is compact and walkable, with taxis and tuk-tuks handling short trips around town. For Amber Mountain National Park, Ramena, the Three Bays and other outlying sights, hiring a car or arranging a private driver or organised tour is the most practical option.

Where to Stay

City-centre and upper-town hotels put the port, restaurants, shops and market within easy reach, while Ramena offers quieter beachfront guesthouses a short drive east of town. Staying near the waterfront is convenient for early starts to the Emerald Sea and the Three Bays.

Food & Drink

Seafood leads the local menu, with fresh tuna, shrimp and reef fish prepared in Malagasy and French styles. Waterfront restaurants, central bakeries and cafés, and the covered market cover everything from grilled fish to French pastries and local snacks.
