About Mahajanga

Mahajanga, also known as Majunga, is the main port city of northwestern Madagascar and the capital of the Boeny region. Set on the Mozambique Channel near the mouth of the Betsiboka River, it is known for its hot, sunny climate, long seafront promenade and relaxed, multicultural atmosphere. The city's famous giant baobab stands by the waterfront as a widely recognized symbol of Mahajanga.

Founded as a Sakalava trading settlement, Mahajanga became the capital of the Boina kingdom in the eighteenth century and later developed into a busy Indian Ocean port. Comorian, Arab, Indian, Swahili and European influences remain visible in its architecture, mosques, churches, markets and local culture, giving the city a distinctive character compared with Madagascar's highland towns.

The Corniche, or Avenue Bord de Mer, runs along the seafront and is the city's social heart, lined with cafés, restaurants and views of the channel. Nearby landmarks include the Indo-Pakistani mosque, the Mahabibo district with its cathedral, the Mozea Akiba museum and colourful street markets where tropical fruit, spices and local crafts are sold.

Beyond the centre, the beach districts of Amborovy, Grand Pavois and Ampazony offer sand, swimming and seaside hotels. Popular excursions include the striking red sandstone landscape of Cirque Rouge, the limestone chambers of the Anjohibe caves, Lake Mangatsa and the Katsepy peninsula across the estuary with its lighthouse. Ankarafantsika National Park is within reach to the southeast.

Mahajanga is both a leisure destination and an important regional trade and business hub. Its port handles goods and fishing activity, while Amborovy Airport links the city to Antananarivo and Indian Ocean routes. Travellers come for beach holidays, diving, fishing, nature trips and business, with a year-round coastal climate that makes the city a gateway to Madagascar's northwest.
