About Toamasina
Toamasina, also known as Tamatave, is Madagascar's largest seaport and the capital of the Atsinanana region on the island's humid east coast. Lying on the Indian Ocean, it is the country's main commercial gateway, handling much of Madagascar's international trade and linking the coast to the capital, Antananarivo, by road and rail.
The city developed around its deep-water port and grew strongly under French colonial rule, when it was known as Tamatave. That past is still visible in the old town, where Creole-style houses, warehouses and colonial-era buildings stand near the waterfront, alongside sites tied to the Betsimisaraka kingdom and later European trading.
The palm-lined Boulevard Joffre is the city's central commercial avenue, running toward the port and the old quarter. Nearby landmarks include the Place de la Colonne, the lively Bazar Be market and the fishing port, while the Vavitiana museum, the historic Canal des Pangalanes and Ivoloina Zoological Park just north of town add cultural and natural interest.
Toamasina is also an industrial and logistics centre, with the port and nearby processing facilities supporting exports such as vanilla, cloves, coffee and nickel-cobalt products. That economic role makes the city important for business travellers, while its tropical setting, beaches and access to the Pangalanes Canal and eastern rainforests appeal to leisure visitors.
For both holidaymakers and professionals, Toamasina offers a different view of Madagascar from the highland capital: a tropical port city with colonial character, bustling markets, seafood dining and easy access to the wildlife and waterways of the east coast.

Toamasina Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Toamasina has a hot, humid tropical climate with rain in every month, so the drier and slightly cooler period from May to October is generally the most comfortable for sightseeing. Cyclone season typically runs from November to April, when heavy rain and storms can disrupt travel.
How to Get Around
Within the city, taxis, tuk-tuks and cycle rickshaws called pousse-pousse are common ways to cover short distances, while the centre around Boulevard Joffre is walkable. For trips to Ivoloina Park, the Pangalanes Canal or surrounding beaches, renting a car or arranging a private driver is more practical.
Where to Stay
Most hotels are concentrated in the city centre and near Boulevard Joffre, close to restaurants, markets and the port area. Quieter seafront and beach options are found along the coast outside the centre, while guesthouses and business-oriented hotels serve both holidaymakers and visiting professionals.
Food & Drink
Toamasina's food centres on fresh seafood, rice-based Malagasy dishes such as romazava, and tropical fruit, coconut and vanilla from the eastern region. Try waterfront restaurants, the Bazar Be market and small local eateries for a mix of coastal specialities and everyday Malagasy cooking.
