About Vianden

Vianden is a small medieval town in north-eastern Luxembourg, set in the narrow valley of the Our river near the German border. Its restored castle, perched on a rocky hillside above the old town, is one of the largest fortified castles west of the Rhine and gives Vianden its instantly recognisable skyline.

The town's history reaches back to Gallo-Roman times and it holds one of Europe's oldest municipal charters, granted in 1308 by the Counts of Vianden. Vianden Castle was built between the 11th and 14th centuries as the seat of the counts, later fell into ruin, and was extensively restored after Grand Duke Jean transferred it to the state in 1977.

Below the castle, the old town climbs between its upper and lower quarters. The Trinitarian Church, founded in 1248, retains a Gothic cloister, and the Victor Hugo Museum occupies the house where the writer stayed in 1871. Luxembourg's only chairlift rises from the town to a viewpoint about 440 metres above the valley.

Vianden is a gateway to the forested Éislek, Luxembourg's Ardennes region. Hiking and cycling routes follow the Our valley, while the town adds an outdoor swimming pool and mini-golf alongside its heritage sights. Seasonal events, including a medieval festival, bring the old streets to life in summer.

Although it is primarily a leisure destination, Vianden's compact centre, castle and riverfront make it a popular day trip from Luxembourg City, about 47 kilometres away. It also works well as a base for exploring northern Luxembourg and the surrounding Our valley.

Vianden Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

Spring through early autumn is best for exploring Vianden, with mild weather for the chairlift, castle tours and valley walks. Summer brings the medieval festival and a livelier atmosphere, while winter is quieter and the castle keeps shorter opening hours.

How to Get Around

Vianden's historic centre is compact and best explored on foot, with the chairlift linking the lower town to hillside viewpoints. Public buses connect the town with Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Clervaux, and a rental car is useful for reaching nearby trails and villages.

Where to Stay

Small hotels and guesthouses cluster around the old town, the river and the slopes below the castle. Staying in Vianden gives easy access to its sights, while nearby Éislek villages offer quieter rural accommodation within a short drive.

Food & Drink

Vianden's restaurants and café terraces along the Our serve Luxembourgish dishes, local produce and light snacks. Try regional specialities such as smoked pork with broad beans, and watch for food stalls during the medieval festival and summer events.
