About Tafilah

Tafilah is the capital of Jordan's southern Tafilah Governorate, a small highland city set about 183 kilometres southwest of Amman. Known for its olive groves, fig trees and grapevines, it has a calm, traditional character that contrasts with Jordan's larger urban centres.

The city has deep roots: it stands on the site of the ancient Edomite settlement of Tophel and preserves traces of Ottoman-era architecture. Nearby landmarks include the rock-cut site of Sela' and the remains of an Ottoman castle, while the city itself is a useful stop along routes between Amman, Karak and Aqaba.

Tafilah's greatest draw is its natural setting. Just outside the city, Dana Biosphere Reserve is Jordan's largest nature reserve, with hiking trails, dramatic wadis and the Feynan Ecolodge. To the north, Wadi al-Hasa offers a long canyon with pools and hiking routes, and the Afra and Burbita hot springs provide a relaxing stop in the surrounding countryside.

The local economy is built on olive farming and related products, with olive oil a well-known specialty of the region. Tafilah Technical University adds an educational and research presence to the area. Business travellers and visitors also use the city as a practical gateway to the Dana reserve, Wadi al-Hasa and the King's Highway.

For leisure and business travellers alike, Tafilah works best as a quieter base for nature tourism, hiking, hot springs and southern Jordan road trips rather than a large-scale city destination. Accommodation and services are modest, but the surrounding landscapes are among the most distinctive in Jordan.
