About Madaba
Madaba is a compact city in central Jordan, about 30 km southwest of Amman, best known as the City of Mosaics. Its centrepiece is the 6th-century Madaba Map, the oldest surviving cartographic depiction of the Holy Land, preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George.
The city's long history reaches back to the Bronze Age and includes Moabite, Nabataean, Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic periods. Madaba flourished under Byzantine rule, when a local school of mosaic artists decorated churches and private homes across the town. After centuries of decline and abandonment, Christian families from nearby Karak resettled Madaba in the late 19th century, sparking its modern revival.
Most of the main sights sit close together in the historic centre. Alongside St. George's Church, visitors can explore the Madaba Archaeological Park with its Church of the Virgin and Hippolytus Hall, the Church of the Apostles and the Madaba Museum, as well as small workshops where mosaics are still made and restored by hand.
Beyond the city, Madaba is a practical base for some of Jordan's most important biblical and natural landmarks. Mount Nebo, the traditional place where Moses viewed the Promised Land, lies about 10 km away, while the Dead Sea, the hot springs of Ma'in and the hilltop fortress of Mukawir are all within easy reach.
For travellers, Madaba offers a quieter, more intimate alternative to Amman, with an authentic market, family-run restaurants and a strong craft tradition. It works equally well as a cultural stop on the King's Highway, a base for religious heritage tours and a convenient first or last night for visitors arriving through Queen Alia International Airport.
