About Kalimantan Barat
Pontianak is the capital of West Kalimantan and one of Indonesia's most distinctive river cities, sitting almost exactly on the equator where the Kapuas and Landak rivers meet. Often called the Equator City, it blends Malay, Dayak and Chinese heritage with a busy role as the gateway to western Borneo.
Founded in 1771 by Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Alkadrie around an old trading settlement, Pontianak grew from the Sultanate of Pontianak into a colonial-era port and later a regional centre. That history survives in landmarks such as the yellow Kadriyah Palace, the Jami' Sultan Syarif Abdurrahman Mosque and waterfront neighbourhoods built on stilts above the river.
The Equator Monument (Tugu Khatulistiwa) in the northern part of the city is the best-known attraction, marking the line at zero degrees latitude. Visitors also explore the Kapuas River, Indonesia's longest river, from the Alun-Alun Kapuas waterfront and traditional boat piers, while markets and historic streets show the city's trading character.
Pontianak's food scene is a highlight, mixing Malay dishes such as bubur pedas and asam pedas with Chinese-influenced kwetiau, choi pan and local coffee culture. Neighbourhoods around Jalan Gajah Mada and the riverside offer markets, cafés and small restaurants, while university life and government offices keep the city active.
For travellers, Pontianak works as both a destination and a base: it connects by air and road to other parts of Kalimantan and nearby Sarawak, and it provides a comfortable introduction to the rivers, culture and food of western Borneo.
