About Sulawesi Tengah

Palu is the capital and largest city of Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, set at the head of Palu Bay where the Palu River reaches the sea. As the province's administrative and trading centre, it works as a practical gateway to the Palu Valley, the Donggala coast, Lore Lindu National Park and Lake Poso.

The city grew from a small agricultural settlement during the colonial era into Central Sulawesi's capital after the province was formed in 1964. The Kaili people are the largest indigenous community, and their language and customs remain part of daily life. Key landmarks include Talise Beach, the Nosarara Nosabatutu Peace Monument with its Nusantara Gong of Peace, and the Central Sulawesi Museum.

Palu is divided into eight districts, including Palu Barat, Palu Timur, Palu Selatan, Palu Utara, Tatanga, Ulujadi, Mantikulore and Tawaeli. The waterfront around Talise Beach and the central commercial streets hold most hotels, cafés, government offices and restaurants, while quieter residential and beachfront areas extend toward the outskirts.

Palu is also a regional service hub, with universities such as Tadulako University and Pantoloan Port supporting trade and logistics. The city was severely damaged by the September 2018 earthquake, tsunami and soil liquefaction, and reconstruction has reshaped coastal and central neighbourhoods while resilience and disaster awareness remain part of local life.

For leisure visitors, Palu offers beaches, monuments, museums and access to Central Sulawesi's highland and lakeside destinations. For business travellers, it is the province's administrative and commercial centre, with hotels, meeting facilities and transport connections focused in and around the city centre.
