About Bay Islands
Roatán, Utila and Guanaja anchor the Bay Islands, a Honduran Caribbean archipelago that feels distinct from the mainland: English and Spanish mix in everyday life, islander and Garifuna traditions shape the culture, and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef runs close to shore. The islands are best known for clear water, coral reefs, diving and a relaxed, beach-oriented way of life.
History runs deep here. Christopher Columbus reached Guanaja in 1502 and claimed the islands for Spain, but centuries of British settlement, trade and Caribbean migration left a lasting English-speaking, Afro-Caribbean identity that still sets the Bay Islands apart. Fishing communities, colonial-era place names and traditional boatbuilding reflect that layered past.
Roatán is the largest and most visited island, with the cruise and transport hubs of Coxen Hole and French Harbour, the dive-and-nightlife centre of West End, and the white-sand beach strip of West Bay. Sandy Bay holds the Carambola Botanical Gardens and marine-focused attractions, while Utila draws divers for whale sharks and a backpacker-friendly scene, and Guanaja offers a quieter, more secluded escape.
Tourism and diving drive the local economy, supported by cruise arrivals, resorts, dive schools and marine conservation work. Visitors combine beach time and snorkelling with tours, fishing, nature parks and island-to-island travel, while business travellers arrive for hospitality, real estate and tourism-related projects.
The Bay Islands appeal to both leisure and business travellers: it is a tropical destination with genuine local character, easy Caribbean access through Roatán's international airport, and a practical base for diving, events and island exploration.
