About Amhara

Bahir Dar is the capital of Ethiopia's Amhara Region and one of the country's most distinctive lakeside cities, set on the southern shore of Lake Tana near the point where the Blue Nile begins its journey from the lake. Wide, palm-lined streets, a relaxed lakeside promenade and a strong regional administrative role give the city a character that blends everyday Ethiopian urban life with one of the country's best-known natural settings.

Bahir Dar grew from a small settlement into an important regional centre, with visible traces of its past in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie on Bezawit Hill and the historic Pedro Páez building linked to early Jesuit presence. Its location beside Lake Tana has made it a gateway to the lake's island monasteries, including centuries-old Ethiopian Orthodox sites such as Ura Kidane Mihret.

The city's main attractions are closely tied to water and history. Boat trips from the lakeshore visit monastery islands and the outlet of the Blue Nile, while the Blue Nile Falls at Tis Abay, about 35 km southeast of the city, are a popular day trip, especially at the end of the rainy season. In town, the market, university area and lakeside restaurants give visitors a sense of local daily life.

Bahir Dar is also the administrative and economic hub of the Amhara Region, with government offices, Bahir Dar University, trade and a growing conference and tourism sector. The modernised Bahir Dar Dejazmach Belay Zeleke International Airport and improving road connections support its role as a base for exploring northern Ethiopia, including Gondar and Lalibela.

For leisure travellers, Bahir Dar offers lake scenery, monastery visits, waterfalls and a calm, walkable centre; for business and conference visitors, it serves as a practical regional base with direct air links to Addis Ababa and access to the wider Amhara Region.

Amhara Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from October to March are generally easiest for sightseeing, lake trips and road travel around Bahir Dar. The Blue Nile Falls are strongest at the end of the rainy season in September and October, when paths can be wet and muddy.

How to Get Around

In Bahir Dar, bajajs, blue-and-white minibuses and taxis cover most short trips, while the lakefront and central areas are walkable. Boats arranged at the lakeshore provide access to Lake Tana's island monasteries, and private vehicles are useful for visits to the Blue Nile Falls or onward travel.

Where to Stay

Lakefront and central areas near the palm-lined promenade are convenient for restaurants, boat piers and city sights. The area around Bahir Dar University and the bus station offers more budget-friendly guesthouses, while hotels farther out provide quieter grounds and easier access to the airport road.

Food & Drink

Bahir Dar's restaurants serve Ethiopian staples such as injera with shiro and doro wat, alongside fresh Lake Tana fish and traditional coffee ceremonies. Lakeside cafés and small local restaurants offer some of the best settings for a relaxed meal or coffee with views over the water.
