About Tigray
Mekelle is the capital of Ethiopia's Tigray Region and the largest city in northern Ethiopia, set on a highland plateau about 780 km north of Addis Ababa. Known as "the Northern Star", it is the administrative, commercial and university centre of Tigray, with a distinctive mix of imperial history, mountain landscapes and fast-changing urban life.
The city's identity is closely tied to Emperor Yohannes IV, who made Mekelle his capital in the 1870s. His palace complex, now a museum, stands near the centre alongside Italian-era fortifications and the former Abreha Castle hotel. The Martyrs' Memorial Monument and several historic Ethiopian Orthodox churches also define the city's core.
Mekelle is organised into sub-cities such as Hawelti, Ayder, Kedamay Weyane and Quiha. The central business districts around Kedamay Weyane, Ayder and Hawelti hold most hotels, banks, cafés and the lively Monday market. Beyond the city, travellers use Mekelle as a base for the rock-hewn churches of Gheralta, the ancient city of Axum and the Danakil Depression.
As the commercial engine of Tigray, Mekelle hosts Mekelle University, manufacturing industries and regional trade routes towards the coast. Business visitors mix with students, traders and development staff, and the city supports conferences, government institutions and a growing hospitality sector.
For leisure and business travellers alike, Mekelle offers a compact but authentic northern Ethiopian experience: imperial heritage, religious sites, highland markets and practical access to some of Ethiopia's most dramatic destinations.
