About Usulután
Usulután is a city in southeastern El Salvador and the capital of the department of the same name. Its name comes from the Nawat language and is commonly translated as "city of the ocelots." Sitting between the Usulután volcano and the Pacific coastal plain, the city serves as the commercial gateway to the Jiquilisco Bay region.
The area was inhabited by Lenca communities before Spanish settlement, and Usulután received villa status in 1827 and city status in 1860. The department was created in 1865. The compact centre is built around a park, the main church, the municipal market and historic buildings that reflect its role as an agricultural and administrative hub.
The city is best known as the access point for the Jiquilisco Bay Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognised mangrove estuary with sea turtle nesting beaches, islands and boat tours from Puerto El Triunfo. Other nearby destinations include the Usulután volcano, the emerald crater lake of Laguna de Alegría and the long beach of Playa El Espino.
Usulután remains a working commercial centre for coffee, sugarcane, grain, fruit and hardwood produced in the surrounding countryside. Fresh seafood from the bay, traditional Salvadoran cooking and busy local markets are part of everyday life in and around the city.
For travellers, Usulután offers a less crowded base for exploring El Salvador's eastern coast and volcanic landscape. It appeals to leisure visitors interested in nature and beaches as well as business travellers connected to agriculture, trade and regional services.
