About El Salvador International Airport
El Salvador International Airport (SAL) is the main international airport serving San Salvador and the rest of El Salvador. It began operations in January 1980 and was renamed in honour of Saint Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez.
The airport is located in San Luis Talpa, La Paz, about 40 km south of central San Salvador, and is reached via the Comalapa motorway (RN-5). It serves as a hub for Avianca and connects El Salvador with destinations across the Americas and the wider region.
Passenger facilities have been modernized in stages: the main terminal was expanded in 2022 with additional waiting rooms and boarding bridges, and a new arrivals terminal opened in 2026 with more migration counters, baggage belts and customs capacity.
The airport provides restaurants, shops, lounges, free Wi-Fi, car rental desks and onward transport links including taxis, shuttle services, private transfers and buses, making it the principal entry point for visitors to San Salvador, the Pacific surf coast and other regions.
