About Orellana

Puerto Francisco de Orellana, commonly known as El Coca, is the capital of Orellana province and the main urban gateway to Ecuador's northern Amazon. Built at the meeting point of the Coca and Napo rivers, the city combines a compact, busy riverside centre with dense rainforest, river ports and a frontier atmosphere that draws visitors heading into the jungle.

The city is named after Francisco de Orellana, the Spanish explorer who passed through the area in 1542 during the first European expedition down the Amazon. Once a small river settlement, El Coca grew rapidly from the late 1960s as oil exploration reshaped the region, and it later became a provincial capital. Its port, petroleum infrastructure and expanding centre reflect that transformation.

Local landmarks include the malecón boardwalk along the Napo River, the Isla de los Monos wildlife sanctuary, the OMACHA archaeological museum and Yasuní Land, a forest park with trails and viewing points. El Coca is best known as the departure point for Yasuní National Park, one of the most biodiverse protected areas on Earth, along with parrot clay licks, the Limoncocha Biological Reserve and Kichwa and Waorani communities.

Beyond tourism, El Coca serves as a logistics and service hub for the oil industry and regional trade. Flights from Quito land at Francisco de Orellana Airport, while motorised canoes carry travellers downstream to rainforest lodges and protected areas along the Napo River.

For leisure travellers, the city offers a practical base for Amazon expeditions; for business visitors, it is a key entry point to one of Ecuador's most important energy-producing regions.
