About Kongo Central
Matadi is the Democratic Republic of the Congo's main sea port and the capital of Kongo Central, set on steep hills along the Congo River near the border with Angola. Its name comes from the Kikongo word for stone, and the rocky, river-facing terrain gives the city much of its distinctive character.
The city developed as a gateway between the Atlantic coast and the interior because ocean-going ships can navigate the Congo River only as far as Matadi before reaching the rapids upstream. The Matadi–Kinshasa Railway, built between 1890 and 1898, linked the port with the capital and helped turn Matadi into a vital trade and transport centre.
Landmarks include the Matadi Bridge, a long suspension bridge across the Congo River often called Pont Maréchal, the Notre-Dame Médiatrice Cathedral and the busy port, one of Central Africa's largest harbours. The lower town holds institutional and port functions, while the upper town and quarters such as Matadi, Nzanza and Mvuzi are livelier residential and market areas.
As the DRC's principal Atlantic port and railhead, Matadi plays a central role in moving imports, exports and goods between Kinshasa and the coast. Its markets, steep streets and riverside setting make it a working city rather than a conventional tourist stop, but it offers a striking look at the country's trade and transport backbone.
For business travellers, Matadi matters as a logistics, port and administration hub, while independent visitors are drawn by its river views, suspension bridge, colonial-era architecture and access to Kongo Central. Its mix of port activity, steep hills and strong Kikongo culture gives the city a distinctive place in western DR Congo.

Kongo Central Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier season from June to September is generally the most comfortable time to visit Matadi, with lower rainfall than the long wet months from October to May. Temperatures stay hot and humid year-round, so light clothing and water are essential.
How to Get Around
Matadi's steep, hilly streets make walking practical mainly in the central lower town. Shared taxis, taxi-buses and motorbike taxis serve the city, while hiring a car with a driver is a common option for longer journeys and less accessible hillside areas.
Where to Stay
Most hotels and guesthouses are concentrated in central Matadi and the lower town, close to the port, railway station and government offices. A few quieter lodges outside the centre offer river views and a more relaxed base for exploring Kongo Central.
Food & Drink
Local food reflects Kongo Central traditions, with grilled fish from the Congo River, fufu, chikwangue and leafy stews such as pondu served alongside fresh fruit. Markets, simple restaurants and cafés in the city centre offer everyday Congolese meals and drinks.
