About Tshopo
Kisangani is the capital of Tshopo Province and one of the Democratic Republic of the Congo's most historically significant river cities. Located at the northern bend of the Congo River, it marks the end of the navigable stretch from Kinshasa and has long served as a gateway to the country's eastern interior. Its tropical setting, riverside activity and calm, green landscape give the city a distinctive character among Congolese urban centres.
The city was founded in 1883 by Henry Morton Stanley as Stanley Falls station and later became known as Stanleyville before taking the name Kisangani in 1966. Its history is closely tied to river trade, colonial administration and the turbulent years following independence. Today the nearby Wagenia Falls, part of the Boyoma Falls system, remain the best-known landmark, where local fishermen still set basket traps on wooden platforms above the rapids.
Kisangani is organised into communes such as Makiso, Kabondo, Tshopo, Mangobo and Lubunga. Makiso is the commercial and administrative heart, home to banks, shops, the central market and many institutions, while the University of Kisangani and its botanical garden attract students and visitors. The city also has the Notre-Dame du Rosaire cathedral and several colonial-era buildings that recall its past as Stanleyville.
As a regional hub, Kisangani connects river, road and air transport for Tshopo Province and the wider northeast. Its port handles goods moving along the Congo River, and Bangoka International Airport links the city with Kinshasa and other domestic destinations. Trade in agricultural products, timber and other local goods supports the economy.
For travellers, Kisangani offers a rare look at Congo River life, equatorial nature and a city shaped by more than a century of history. It is relevant to business visitors for trade, administration and regional logistics, and to leisure travellers for the falls, the riverfront, botanical gardens and the experience of a less-visited but important Congolese city.
