About Jilin

Jilin City is the second-largest city in Jilin Province and the only Chinese city that shares its name with its province. Built along the winding Songhua River, it is widely known as the River City and serves as a gateway to the lakes, mountains and ski slopes of northeastern China.

The city has deep Manchu roots and was a former provincial capital of Jilin. Its name comes from Jilin Wula, a Manchu expression meaning city along the river. Historic sites such as the Jilin Confucian Temple and the early 20th-century Catholic church stand alongside broad riverside boulevards and modern neighbourhoods.

Jilin City is best known for its winter landscapes. Rime ice forms along the Songhua River and Rime Island between December and February, while the nearby Beidahu and Songhua Lake ski resorts draw winter sports travellers. In warmer months, Songhua Lake offers boating and lakeside scenery, and the surrounding hills are popular for hiking.

The Jilin Meteorite Museum displays the 1,770-kilogram main mass of the 1976 Jilin meteorite shower, one of the world's largest recorded stony meteorite falls. Neighbourhoods such as Chuanying and Fengman offer parks, markets and river views that show the city's more everyday character.

As a former industrial centre, Jilin City remains relevant for business tied to petrochemicals, energy and regional trade, while its winter tourism, Manchu heritage and position near Changchun make it a practical stop for both leisure and business travellers.
