About Tboung Khmum
Suong is the capital and largest city of Cambodia's Tboung Khmum province, a compact administrative and commercial centre about 90 kilometres east of Phnom Penh. Set in the central lowlands along National Roads 7 and 73, the city serves as a practical gateway to the province's rubber estates, agricultural villages and quieter border districts.
The city's identity is shaped by its role as a provincial capital created in 2014, when Tboung Khmum was separated from Kampong Cham. Around Suong, broad red-earth roads, local markets and government buildings reflect a working provincial centre rather than a major tourism hub. Nearby, the Chup rubber plantation and the estates around Memot and Ponhea Kraek give the area a distinctive landscape of orderly rubber trees.
Daily life centres on Suong's market and the streets radiating from the main road junction. Visitors come for a slower, authentic Cambodian experience: morning markets, roadside food stalls, friendly neighbourhoods and access to rural scenes. Memot district, closer to the Vietnamese border, carries historical traces of the wartime era and is known for its circular earthworks and rubber estates.
Suong is convenient for travellers moving between Phnom Penh and Cambodia's eastern provinces. It is a modest destination for business linked to agriculture, rubber and cross-border trade, and it offers a low-key stopover for those exploring the Mekong lowlands.
Whether passing through by road or using Suong as a base for rural exploration, visitors find a small but functional city that reveals everyday Cambodia beyond the better-known tourist centres.

Tboung Khmum Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry season from November to March is the most comfortable time to visit Suong and Tboung Khmum province, with lower humidity and easier road access. The wet season from May to October brings heavy rain that can make rural roads muddy, while the rice harvest and rubber-tapping season add seasonal interest.
How to Get Around
Suong is compact enough to explore on foot or by moto-taxi, and remork-motos are widely available for short trips. For the surrounding districts and rubber plantations, hiring a car or motorbike is the most practical option, as public transport links are limited.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Suong is mostly small guesthouses and basic hotels concentrated near the town centre and the National Road 7 junction. Travellers wanting a wider range of hotels can also base themselves in Kampong Cham and make a day trip to Suong.
Food & Drink
Local dining in Suong centres on Cambodian staples such as rice, fish, soups and grilled meats, with simple restaurants and market stalls serving provincial fare.
