About Svay Rieng
Svay Rieng is the capital of Cambodia's Svay Rieng Province, a quiet riverside town in the country's southeast. Set near the Waiko River and its seasonal marshlands, it sits roughly 125 km from Phnom Penh and about 43 km from the Bavet border crossing with Vietnam, giving it a practical role as a stopover on National Highway No. 1.
The town's landscape is defined by flat, wet plains used for rice farming and fishing, with the Mekong River and Tonle Bassac forming parts of the province's natural boundaries. During the monsoon the lowlands partly flood, while the dry season leaves the Waiko River and surrounding marshland as scenic, gently changing settings around the town.
Local landmarks include the Waiko Bridge and the Prey Ba Sak lake and temple area just outside town, along with smaller ancient temple ruins such as Prasat Basac and Prasat Chea Hao. The central market is a lively spot for money changing and daily trade in riel, dollars and Vietnamese dong.
Svay Rieng's economy is built mainly on agriculture, fishing and border commerce, with garment factories adding some industrial employment. Its position between Phnom Penh and Ho Chi Minh City makes it relevant for cross-border business travelers and traders, while the town itself remains calm and welcoming.
For leisure and business visitors alike, Svay Rieng offers a genuine look at rural Cambodian life, convenient access to Vietnam-bound routes, and a peaceful base for exploring the province's temple ruins and wetland scenery.
