About Bursa
Bursa is a large city in northwestern Turkey, set on the lower slopes of Mount Uludağ at the edge of the fertile Bursa plain. Known as "Green Bursa" for its parks, gardens and surrounding forests, it was the first major capital of the Ottoman Empire and remains one of the country's most important industrial and cultural centres.
Founded as the ancient city of Prusa and conquered by the Ottomans in 1326, Bursa shaped the early architecture and institutions of the empire. Its UNESCO-listed historic centre includes the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami), the Green Mosque and Green Tomb, the Koza Han silk market and several early Ottoman sultan tombs, along with thermal baths that have drawn visitors since Roman times.
The city spreads across districts such as Osmangazi, the historic core around bazaars and monuments; Nilüfer, a modern area of offices, universities and newer neighbourhoods; and Çekirge, known for its hot springs. Nearby, the preserved Ottoman village of Cumalıkızık and the lakeside town of İznik add day-trip depth, while Mount Uludağ is a popular ski resort reached by cable car.
Bursa is a major automotive, textile and food-production hub, home to factories such as Oyak Renault and Tofaş and to a strong university and business community. Its silk heritage, İskender kebab, candied chestnuts and peach orchards give the city a distinctive local identity alongside its industrial strength.
For travellers, Bursa offers Ottoman monuments, thermal spas, mountain sports and easy access to Istanbul by ferry or road, making it a practical destination for both leisure visits and business trips.
