About Rondônia

Porto Velho is the capital of Rondônia and a gateway to the Brazilian Amazon, set on the east bank of the Madeira River. Its spread-out territory makes it one of Brazil's largest municipalities by area, while its compact historic centre concentrates much of the city's identity around the former Madeira-Mamoré Railroad.

The city grew from the early 20th-century construction of the Madeira-Mamoré railway, which connected the Madeira and Mamoré rivers and drew workers from across Brazil and beyond. Landmarks such as the Estrada de Ferro Madeira-Mamoré railway complex, the Três Caixas d'Água water tanks and the Catedral Sagrado Coração de Jesus preserve that history.

Modern Porto Velho mixes Amazonian river life with a service-driven economy. The Mercado Cultural, riverfront walkways and nearby districts offer markets, regional food and local crafts, while outlying areas give access to riverside communities, islands and forest reserves for ecotourism.

The city is also an important regional centre for agribusiness, trade, logistics and energy, supported by the Madeira River and large hydroelectric plants nearby. Its airport, river port and road links to the rest of Brazil make it relevant for business travellers as well as visitors exploring the Amazon.

For travellers, Porto Velho serves as both a practical base and an introduction to western Amazonia, combining urban services with nearby natural landscapes.

Rondônia Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from May to October is generally the most comfortable for exploring Porto Velho and the surrounding Amazon. Heavy rains are common from December to March, when some river and forest activities can be affected.

How to Get Around

The city has public buses and taxis, with ride-hailing apps widely used in central areas. Because the municipality is very large, rental cars or private drivers are useful for reaching districts and attractions outside the centre.

Where to Stay

Centro is convenient for the historic area, riverfront and main services, while neighbourhoods such as São Cristóvão and Embratel offer malls, restaurants and hotels close to the airport road. Lodging ranges from business hotels to smaller Amazonian-style guesthouses.

Food & Drink

Local cuisine highlights Amazonian fish such as tambaqui and pirarucu, plus açaí, tacacá, farinha and regional fruit juices. Try riverside restaurants, the Mercado Cultural and neighbourhood eateries for traditional Rondônia flavours.
