About Zardab
Zardab (Zərdab) is a compact city in central Azerbaijan and the administrative centre of Zardab District, lying on the flat, fertile Shirvan plain along the Kura River. The name derives from the Persian zard-ab, or "yellow water", a nod to the river's silt-laden colour. Its low-rise streets, market area and riverside setting give the town a quiet, agricultural character.
Zardab is best known as the birthplace of Hasan bey Zardabi, the 19th-century educator and journalist who founded Akinchi ("The Ploughman") in 1875, widely regarded as the first Azerbaijani-language newspaper. The district was formally created in 1935, and its history stretches back to the medieval Shirvanshah era. Cotton farming shaped much of the town's 20th-century development, and agriculture remains central today.
Visitors can explore the Hasan bey Zardabi house-museum, which displays manuscripts, early copies of Akinchi and household objects, and the green space of Heydar Aliyev Park. The Veysel Garani shrine draws local pilgrims, while the Kura riverbank and the town bazaar offer a glimpse of everyday life. Traditional carpet weaving is also part of Zardab's cultural heritage.
For travellers, Zardab is a modest regional stop rather than a mass-tourism destination. It suits visitors tracing Azerbaijan's press and cultural history, those exploring the central Aran region, or anyone travelling between Baku and the country's western districts. Kurdamir and Ujar, nearby transport hubs with railway connections, are common bases, while private transfers and rental cars make the town and its surroundings easier to reach.
