About Zaqatala

Zaqatala is a compact city in northwestern Azerbaijan, set in the foothills of the Greater Caucasus and serving as the centre of Zaqatala District. It sits on the Tala River at around 518 metres above sea level, with forested hills and mountain ridges rising beyond the town. The area is known for hazelnuts, walnuts, rose-growing and the nearby Zaqatala Nature Reserve, giving the city a distinctly green and outdoors-oriented character.

Much of Zaqatala's historic interest is concentrated around its 19th-century town centre. The most prominent landmark is the ruined Russian-built fortress from the 1830s, which now forms the Zaqatala Historical-Cultural Reserve and houses the state art gallery. From the fortress area, the broad Galaduzu stairway leads toward Dede Gorgud Square, while other heritage sites include the old Albanian church, Tala Mosque and the local history museum on Heydar Aliyev Avenue.

The compact centre is easy to explore on foot, with parks, tea houses and a small market providing a relaxed local atmosphere. Surrounding villages such as Jar and Danachi offer orchards, craft traditions and a gateway to hiking routes in the Greater Caucasus, including sections of the Transcaucasian Trail. The Zaqatala Nature Reserve protects forests and wildlife such as brown bears, wild boar and West Caucasian tur.

As the administrative and commercial hub of the district, Zaqatala supports regional agriculture, trade and public services. Its economy is closely tied to hazelnut and walnut production, silk tradition and cross-border commerce with neighbouring regions. The food scene is modest but local, built around grilled meats, fresh herbs, dairy, mountain honey, seasonal fruit and strong tea.

For leisure travellers, Zaqatala offers a quieter, nature-focused alternative to Azerbaijan's larger cities, while business visitors use it as a practical base for district administration, agriculture and regional trade. Its position between Sheki and the Georgian and Russian border areas also makes it a useful stop on longer Caucasus itineraries.
