About Mostaganem

Mostaganem is a Mediterranean port city and the capital of Mostaganem Province in northwestern Algeria, set on the Gulf of Arzew about 72 kilometres east of Oran. It is the second-largest city in the country's northwest and one of Algeria's most important coastal and port centres, known for its beaches, hillside old town and relaxed maritime character.

The city traces its origins to Punic and Roman times and grew from an 11th-century settlement named Murustage. It later passed through Zirid, Almoravid, Zayyanid and Marinid rule, and in the 16th century it resisted a Spanish attack before coming under Ottoman control under Hayreddin Barbarossa. During the Second World War, Allied forces built a major amphibious port here.

The old quarter of Tigdit, on the western side of the Aïn Sefra ravine, retains a traditional atmosphere, while the newer eastern districts hold commercial streets, cafés and public buildings. Notable landmarks include the Marinid Great Mosque, the Borj Ettork fortress, the old bridge over the ravine and the seafront Promenade des Anglais.

Mostaganem is also a university town, home to the University of Abdelhamid Ibn Badis, and its port connects passengers and freight with Mediterranean routes. Sandy beaches such as Sablettes, Stidia and Salamandre draw summer visitors, while the surrounding region supports agriculture and fishing.

For both leisure and business travellers, Mostaganem offers a practical coastal base near Oran, with beaches, historic sites, local markets and connections by road, port and nearby airport.
