About Touggourt
Touggourt is a Saharan oasis city in northeastern Algeria and the capital of Touggourt Province. Set in the Oued Righ valley, a chain of palm-filled depressions running between Biskra and Ouargla, it has long served as a regional gateway between the northern steppe and the deep Sahara. The city's history is visible in the old ksar of Mestaoua, the compact historic core whose narrow, palm-trunk-covered lanes date from before the 15th century. Nearby, the Djamaa El-Kebir mosque, founded in 1805 by Sultan Ibrahim Ben Djellab, anchors the old quarter, while the simple white tombs of the Beni Djellab sultans lie just west of town. These remains recall Touggourt's past as the seat of a Saharan sultanate until the French conquest of the Oued Righ in 1854. Modern Touggourt spreads around the older centre, with the main market close to the heart of town and dense palm groves extending along the valley floor. Beyond the centre, small oasis settlements such as Temacine, with its fortified ksar, and Megarine show the region's traditional date-farming landscape, while the surrounding dunes mark the edge of the Grand Erg Oriental. Touggourt remains an important trading and administrative hub for the Oued Righ, especially for the Deglet Nour date harvest and distribution that dominate the local economy. Its position on the national route linking Biskra with Ouargla and Hassi Messaoud also makes it a practical stop for business travellers moving through Algeria's eastern Sahara and its energy-producing south. For visitors, Touggourt offers a quieter, more rooted Saharan experience than the larger northern cities: palm-grove walks, old ksour, lively souks and a sense of the desert oases' trading history. For business travellers, it functions as a regional administrative centre and transit point, making it useful both as a destination and as a base for exploring the Oued Righ.

Touggourt Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
October to November and March to April offer the most comfortable conditions, with warm days and cooler nights suited to exploring the ksour and palm groves. Winter days are mild and sunny, while June to August can bring extreme Saharan heat best avoided for outdoor sightseeing.
How to Get Around
Touggourt is small enough to explore the central market and old ksar on foot, while shared taxis and private taxis connect the centre with nearby oasis towns and Sidi Mahdi Airport. A car with a driver or a rental car is useful for reaching Temacine, Megarine and the wider Oued Righ, and the railway links the city with Biskra.
Where to Stay
Most hotels are concentrated in and around the city centre, close to the main market, restaurants and the N3 through-route. These are practical bases for an overnight stop between Biskra and Ouargla, while a few quieter options sit nearer the palm groves and the road toward the airport.
Food & Drink
Touggourt's food reflects Saharan Algerian cooking, with couscous, slow-cooked tagines, grilled meats and hearty soups, alongside dates from the surrounding Deglet Nour palm groves. Mint tea and date-based sweets are common, and the central market is the best place to sample local produce and everyday café life.
