About Tlemcen

Tlemcen is a historic city in northwestern Algeria and the capital of Tlemcen Province, close to the Moroccan border. Known as the Pearl of the Maghreb, it combines Andalusian, Arab and Berber influences and is regarded as one of Algeria's most culturally distinctive cities.

The city was an important centre under the Almoravids, Almohads and the Zayyanid kingdom, which made it a medieval capital. Its legacy survives in landmarks such as the Great Mosque of Tlemcen, the El Mechouar Palace, the mosque and tomb complex of Sidi Boumediene, and the ruins of the Mansourah minaret.

The old medina, the El Mechouar quarter and neighbourhoods around Place de l'Indépendance are good starting points, while the Lalla Setti plateau offers views over the city. Tlemcen National Park and nearby waterfalls add outdoor variety, and local museums and craft workshops highlight the city's tradition of leatherwork, textiles and embroidery.

Tlemcen is also a regional centre for education, trade and light industry, with Abou Bekr Belkaid University and a busy commercial core. Andalusian music, poetry and cultural festivals remain part of daily life, and the city was named Capital of Islamic Culture in 2011.

For travellers, Tlemcen offers a compact historic centre, distinctive architecture and a slower, authentic pace than the coastal cities, making it appealing for both cultural visitors and business trips to western Algeria.
