About Tizi Ouzou

Tizi Ouzou is the capital of Tizi Ouzou Province and the largest city of Algeria's Kabylie region, set in the foothills of the Djurdjura mountains roughly 90–100 km east of Algiers. Its name comes from the Kabyle words for a mountain pass, and the city remains a stronghold of Amazigh language and culture.

The city grew around an Ottoman-era fort, the Bordj Turc, which still stands among its older quarters, and later became an important administrative centre under French rule and during the Algerian War of Independence. The surrounding Kabylie highlands are known for ancient villages, Roman-era sites and a long tradition of local identity.

Tizi Ouzou combines a compact modern centre with the older Haute Ville, where narrow streets, markets and traditional houses cluster near the historic fort. Mouloud Mammeri University makes the city a major student and cultural hub, while nearby Djurdjura National Park, Tikjda and the Yakouren forest offer mountain scenery and hiking.

The city is a gateway to Kabylie's craft villages, including the silver jewellery workshops of Ait Yenni, and to the Mediterranean coast at Tigzirt with its Roman ruins and beaches. Local markets, cafés and restaurants serve Kabyle cooking such as couscous, olive oil, figs and grilled meat, alongside everyday bakeries and tea houses.

For travellers, Tizi Ouzou is both a practical base for exploring the Kabylie mountains and coast and a destination in its own right, with a lively market culture, university atmosphere and strong Amazigh identity. Business visitors are drawn by the city's role as an administrative and commercial centre for the region.
