About El Oued
El Oued is the capital of El Oued Province in Algeria's northeastern Sahara and is widely known as the 'City of a Thousand Domes.' Its white domed houses, built from local clay and brick, give the city a distinctive skyline and help keep interiors cool in the desert heat. The surrounding Souf region combines palm groves, sand dunes and oasis settlements.
The city's character comes from its traditional Saharan architecture and the contrast between the compact old centre and newer districts. Covered alleys and curved streets lead to the lively daily souk, where dates, crafts and regional products are traded, while the Sidi Salem mosque remains a historic landmark.
Date palms are central to local life and the regional economy; El Oued is especially known for producing Deglet Nour dates. Visitors come for the markets, traditional crafts and access to the dunes of the nearby Grand Erg Oriental.
As a regional administrative and trade centre, El Oued also serves business travellers involved in agriculture, date processing and public services. Most hotels and services are concentrated near the centre and along main roads.
For both leisure and business visitors, El Oued offers a practical base to experience Saharan oasis culture, traditional markets and desert landscapes within a short distance of the city.
