About Montserrat

Montserrat is a small British Overseas Territory in the Leeward Islands of the Eastern Caribbean. Known as the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean, it combines a relaxed island lifestyle with a dramatic volcanic landscape shaped by the Soufrière Hills Volcano.

Brades is the de facto capital and main administrative centre, while Little Bay is being developed as the future capital and port. Salem, St John's and other northern villages are home to most residents after the former capital, Plymouth, was buried by eruptions beginning in 1995.

Beyond its settlements, Montserrat features green mountains, forested trails, coastal cliffs and black-sand beaches. The Soufrière Hills Volcano and the exclusion zone around Plymouth remain central to the island's identity, with safe observation points offering views of the buried city. Irish heritage, calypso, carnival traditions and a small local music scene shape daily life and culture.

Montserrat is a quiet, low-key destination where tourism focuses on nature, hiking, birdwatching, diving and volcano viewing. St Patrick's Festival in March blends Irish and Caribbean traditions, while the island's modest visitor infrastructure is concentrated in the inhabited northern parishes.

Transport connections are limited but workable. John A. Osborne Airport receives regional flights, mainly to and from Antigua, and ferry services also link Montserrat with Antigua. On the island, taxis, rental cars and local road transport serve the north, making travel between the airport, villages, hotels, viewpoints and the ferry terminal relatively straightforward.
