About Saint Peter
Saint Peter is the northern parish of Montserrat, a small British Overseas Territory in the Caribbean's Leeward Islands, and the only fully inhabited part of the island today. It serves as the island's modern centre of daily life, government and services after the Soufrière Hills volcano reshaped Montserrat in the 1990s.
The Soufrière Hills eruptions from 1995 onward buried the former capital, Plymouth, under volcanic ash and created a long-term exclusion zone across much of the southern parishes. Since then, Brades in Saint Peter has acted as the de facto capital, while Little Bay is being developed nearby as a planned future capital and port town.
Within Saint Peter, visitors can hike rainforest trails in the Centre Hills reserve, look for the endemic Montserrat oriole, visit the Montserrat National Trust gardens near Salem, and reach Rendezvous Bay, the island's only white-sand beach, by trail or boat. Safe viewpoints over the exclusion zone offer a striking look at the volcano's ongoing legacy.
The parish blends Irish heritage with Caribbean culture, reflected in lively St. Patrick's Day celebrations each March, local dishes such as goat water and fresh seafood, and a relaxed pace of life. Small guesthouses, villas and restaurants cluster around Brades, Salem, St. John's and Little Bay.
For both leisure and business travellers, Saint Peter is the practical gateway to Montserrat, with John A. Osborne Airport near Geralds, ferry connections to Antigua at Little Bay, and most of the island's offices and services. It suits visitors seeking volcano history, nature, diving and a quiet, unhurried Caribbean escape.
