About Saint Georges
Saint Georges is the easternmost of Montserrat's three administrative parishes and has been uninhabited since the late 1990s. Most of the parish lies within the Soufrière Hills Volcano exclusion zone, which has reshaped the island's settlement patterns and history. The volcanic crisis began in 1995 and intensified in 1997, when pyroclastic flows and ash destroyed settlements across the southern and eastern parts of Montserrat. Villages in Saint Georges such as Bethel, Bramble, Harris, Trants, Tuitts and Windy Hill were abandoned, and the former W. H. Bramble Airport, once the island's international gateway, was closed and left buried by volcanic deposits. Today the parish is a largely overgrown landscape of former villages, fields and coastal sites such as Spanish Point. Access is restricted because of the ongoing volcanic hazard, and visits are generally limited to authorised guided tours or viewpoints along the edge of the safe zone. For visitors, Montserrat's inhabited north remains the practical base, while Saint Georges provides an important window into the island's recent volcanic past. The Montserrat Volcano Observatory and lookouts in the north help travellers understand the events that emptied the parish and continue to shape Montserrat.
