About French Southern Territories

The French Southern Territories are a remote French overseas territory scattered across the southern Indian Ocean and the edge of Antarctica. With no permanent civilian population, the territory centres on scientific stations, wildlife reserves and some of the least disturbed landscapes on Earth.

The best-known districts are the Kerguelen Islands, home to the Port-aux-Français station, the Crozet Islands, and the Amsterdam and Saint-Paul islands. Adélie Land, France's Antarctic sector, includes the Dumont d'Urville research station, while the Scattered Islands are small coral and volcanic islets in the western Indian Ocean.

The scenery is shaped by volcanic peaks, glaciers, fjords, tundra-like plains and steep coastal cliffs. The French Austral Lands and Seas are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and huge colonies of penguins, albatrosses, seals and other seabirds rely on these waters and shorelines.

Travel is tightly controlled and largely limited to researchers and a small number of expedition tourists. Most access is by the supply ship Marion Dufresne, which sails from Réunion a few times a year, while the Antarctic sector is served through research logistics.

The territory has no public road or rail network, and movement between islands and bases depends on ships, small boats and occasional aircraft used for scientific missions. This limited infrastructure means journeys are organised around research schedules, supply voyages and expedition itineraries rather than regular passenger services.
