About Comoros

Comoros is a small island nation in the Indian Ocean, set between the Mozambique coast and northern Madagascar. Its three main islands — Grande Comore, Anjouan and Mohéli — offer volcanic highlands, quiet beaches, coral reefs and a relaxed pace shaped by African, Arab and French influences.

Moroni, the capital on Grande Comore, is the country's main gateway and commercial centre, with a historic medina, mosques and the nearby Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport. Mutsamudu, on Anjouan, is known for its old stone town, citadel and winding lanes, while Fomboni serves as the small, low-key capital of Mohéli.

The islands are volcanic in origin. Mount Karthala, an active volcano on Grande Comore, rises above cloud forests and crater landscapes, while the surrounding seas hold coral reefs and rich marine life. Agriculture defines much of daily life, with vanilla, cloves and especially ylang-ylang grown for the perfume industry.

Comoros has a small tourism sector centred on nature, culture and coastal relaxation rather than mass travel. Visitors come for hiking, snorkelling, spice gardens and the islands' distinctive blend of Swahili, Arab and French heritage.

Transport within Comoros relies mainly on inter-island flights, ferries and a limited road network, as there is no railway. Prince Said Ibrahim International Airport near Moroni links the country with regional destinations, and onward travel between the islands is typically arranged by air, ferry, private transfers or rental vehicles.
