About Mohéli
Mohéli (Mwali) is the smallest of the three main islands of the Union of the Comoros, a quiet and heavily forested destination known for its marine park, nesting sea turtles and unhurried pace. Its capital and main town, Fomboni, is a small coastal settlement where most island services and the local market are concentrated.
The island has a distinct past as the former Sultanate of Mohéli. France made it a protectorate in 1886 and later annexed it, and after Comorian independence in 1975 Mohéli became an autonomous island within the Union of the Comoros. This history is reflected in a rural, predominantly Comorian culture shaped by fishing, farming and Islamic tradition.
Mohéli's best-known attraction is the Mohéli Marine Park, one of the first marine protected areas in the Comoros. Visitors use Nioumachoua as a base for snorkelling trips to nearby islets, while beaches near Itsamia are famous for green turtle nesting. Offshore, humpback whales are regularly seen between July and October, and inland the volcanic crater lake Lac Dziani Boundouni offers a rewarding hike.
Beyond the marine park, the island rewards slow travel. Fomboni has a working market, an old jetty and the island's main shops and services, while coastal villages such as Nioumachoua and Itsamia offer simple guesthouses and eco-lodge stays. The pace of life remains agricultural and village-based, with small-scale farming and fishing central to the local economy.
For travellers, Mohéli is primarily a nature and eco-tourism destination, though it also sees a modest flow of business and development-related visits. Mohéli Bandar Es Eslam Airport connects the island with Moroni and Anjouan by scheduled flights, and many visitors pair a short stay here with time on the busier capital islands.

Mohéli Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The dry, cooler season from June to October is the most comfortable time to visit Mohéli, with lower rainfall and better sea conditions. Humpback whales are seen around the island between July and October, while turtle nesting can be observed at beaches near Itsamia.
How to Get Around
Mohéli has limited but workable transport: shared taxis and hired 4x4 vehicles link Fomboni with Nioumachoua, Itsamia and other villages along mostly basic roads. Boats are commonly used for trips between coastal villages and the islets of the marine park, while Fomboni itself is compact enough to explore on foot.
Where to Stay
Fomboni offers a small choice of simple hotels and guesthouses near the market and waterfront, while Nioumachoua is the best base for the marine park with eco-lodges and bungalows. Itsamia also has basic community-run guesthouses for visitors coming to see nesting turtles.
Food & Drink
Local cooking centres on fresh fish and seafood, rice, coconut, cassava, plantains and tropical fruit, often seasoned with spices. Fomboni's market is the best place to sample local produce and street snacks, while guesthouses and small restaurants serve grilled fish, lobster and coconut-based dishes.
