About Central African Republic
The Central African Republic is a landlocked Central African country shaped by dense rainforest, savanna, rivers and strong local traditions. Its capital, Bangui, sits on the Ubangi River, which forms part of the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is the usual starting point for journeys into the country.
Bangui is the political and economic centre, with landmarks such as the Boganda National Museum, the central market and the riverside. Other towns including Bouar, Berbérati, Bambari and Mbaïki reflect regional life, while Bouar is known for prehistoric megaliths and Ndélé for its northern setting.
The country's landscapes range from the rainforests and forest clearings, or bais, of Dzanga-Sangha in the southwest to the savanna parks of Manovo-Gounda St Floris and Bamingui-Bangoran in the north. Forest elephants, western lowland gorillas and rich birdlife attract specialist wildlife travellers, while sites such as the Chutes de Boali waterfalls offer a striking stop near Bangui.
Culture is shaped by French and Sango influences, with Sango widely spoken alongside French, and by music, dance and craft traditions that vary between regions. The country appeals mainly to adventurous travellers and those interested in conservation, although security conditions in some areas require careful planning and current travel advice.
Bangui M'Poko International Airport is the main air gateway, with roads linking the capital to towns and to neighbouring Cameroon and Chad, and river transport used on the Ubangi. Private transfers, chauffeur services, charter buses and rental cars support journeys between the airport, hotels and destinations, although road conditions and local travel advice should be checked in advance.
