About Sangha-Mbaéré
Nola is the capital of Sangha-Mbaéré prefecture in the southwestern Central African Republic. The town sits where the Mambéré and Kadéï rivers meet to form the Sangha River, giving it a long-standing role as a small river port, trading centre and gateway to one of Central Africa's most important rainforest areas.
The settlement grew from a colonial administrative post established in the late nineteenth century. Today Nola remains a modest provincial centre with a mixed population that includes Bantu communities and BaAka forest peoples, and its riverbanks are known for small-scale gold and diamond digging.
Nearby landmarks include the Sangha riverfront, Dimoli waterfall and Mount Ngounga. The main regional attraction is the Dzanga-Sangha forest complex around Bayanga, part of the Sangha Trinational UNESCO World Heritage site, where visitors can see forest elephants at Dzanga Bai, track western lowland gorillas and explore the river by pirogue.
The local economy revolves around timber, coffee, farming, river trade and artisanal mining, while conservation organisations and forestry companies maintain a steady presence in the area. For business travellers, Nola serves as a practical base for work in the surrounding prefecture.
Nola is best suited to travellers who value wildlife, rainforest landscapes and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Independent visitors should plan carefully, as transport links and accommodation are limited, and the area is reached mainly by road from Bangui or Berbérati.

Sangha-Mbaéré Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months from December to April are the most reliable time to visit Nola and the surrounding Sangha-Mbaéré region, when roads are more passable and wildlife viewing in Dzanga-Sangha is easier. The rainy season from May to October brings lush forest scenery but can make rural roads muddy and difficult.
How to Get Around
Nola itself is small and easy to explore on foot or by motorcycle taxi. For trips to Bayanga and Dzanga-Sangha National Park, a four-wheel-drive vehicle with an experienced local driver is essential, while pirogues are used for travel on the Sangha River.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Nola is limited to simple guesthouses and small lodges. Visitors heading to Dzanga-Sangha usually base themselves in Bayanga, where a few eco-lodges and guesthouses offer stays closer to the forest.
Food & Drink
Local food in Nola is built around cassava, plantains, rice, grilled fish from the Sangha River and stews served in small maquis and market stalls. Fresh tropical fruit, coffee and locally produced palm wine are common, while dining options are simple and informal.
